NYPA understands the critical need for well-trained and enthusiastic journalists, and looks to partner with colleges and universities throughout the state that include journalism (especially print journalism) as part of their curricula. These partnerships can take the form of symposia, guest lectures, community journalism projects, and other means of connecting budding journalists with local print news outlets.
In addition to the association’s annual paid internship program, staff and board members serve on the boards and committees of journalism schools throughout New York, and NYPA members teach journalism at their local colleges and universities.
Future plans include partnerships with journalism schools to increase students’ awareness of community newspapers as the center of locally focused news and as potential future employers. Through NYPA’s Better Newspaper Contest, college newspaper staff can also compete against their peers for top honors in editorial, design, photojournalism, and other categories.
